RION - "Rechtsinformatik Online" (Computer Law Online) is an inter-university, nationwide project designed to create an internet platform for the field of computer law. It combines the strengths and resources of participating universtities in an effort to enhance present-day teaching.
Universities in the following cities are participants in this project:
Computer law is gaining importance in this age of new media by developing interdisciplinarily and, thus, constantly changing. Interdisciplinary co-operation and flexibility is necessary in understanding the topics dealt with, the fields of knowledge as well as the changeover to a more didactic format.
There is no official designation of this new field at the universities where it is currently being taught. Among those who study computer law are students of: law, computer science, business management and knowledge management. This presents a challenge to present-day teaching, conducted mostly by those who have studied law exclusively. The RION project will, in response, create a more transparent and interdisciplinary learning environment.
In the framework of the sponsorship programme "New Media in Education" (running from March 2001 - August 2003), RION is being financed with almost 1.5 Million Euro from the National Department of Education and Research (BMBF). A large part of these resources is being used for the Institute for Computer Science and Society (IIG) in Freiburg, where a general didactic framework and the evaluation are being developed for the project. The previously instructional-based teaching of each separate subject is expanded via the integration of interactive, practical and communicative elements. Along with the readying of teaching materials, the internet is approaching great importance as a means of learning, particularly due to its support of co-operative and practical forms of learning.
One particular method of support is the use of the Freiburg-bases MOO (Multi-User, Object-Oriented Domain). JurMOO is an educational MOO, based on the enCore-Database and works with the MOO-Driver LambdaMOO. Along with the use of diverse communication functions, practical open scenarios and assingments will also be implemented. Individual users and work-groups, in turn, can expand these.
Beyond the field of computer law, didactic measures relating to the possibilities of virtual corporations and thei evaluation at IIG are being developed. In addition, "gender problems" arising from the changes brought about by new media in learning at universities will be given attention.
